What is an Americano? A Caffe Americano is a very popular coffee drink which combines espresso with hot water. Espresso on it's own is wonderful, but its over so fast! With an Americano the experience lasts a bit longer and the hot water smooths the bitterness of the espresso.
This drink can be made with 1 or 2 shots of espresso and varying ratios of hot water. That's it! A true Americano does not have milk included. Of course you can add milk if you want, just know that it is no longer a true Americano.
Here are some espresso to hot water ratios to try. Use 2 parts hot water to 1 part espresso for a typical Americano. For a smoother, milder cup of coffee try 3 parts hot water to 1 part espresso.
2 oz espresso (2 shots)
4 oz hot water
Prepare the espresso using an espresso machine, manual espresso maker, or Aeropress. Pour the espresso into a mug.
Heat the water to 190 F and pour it into the espresso. Enjoy!
The recipe makes a "typical" Americano with 2 parts hot water to 1 part espresso. Feel free to try different ratios to suit your taste! For a milder, smoother Americano try 3 parts hot water to 1 part espresso.
